New Bedford residents are expected to get some news on Monday regarding the selection process for a new police chief.

Mayor Jon Mitchell's office says there will be an announcement Monday morning regarding "the future leadership of the New Bedford Police Department."

This announcement comes after a process was outlined for the next chief following the death of Police Chief David A. Provencher.

A screening committee was also formed which included a City Councillor, community leaders, current and retired members of the New Bedford Police Department, and other law enforcement professionals.

The two remaining candidates for the position are Capt. Joseph C. Cordeiro, the commander of the downtown station and Lt. Richard A. Netinho who is in charge of the evening shift at the downtown station.

A third candidate, Detective Captain Steven Vicente who is the Commander-Major Crimes Unit and the Public Information Officer for the department withdrew his name from consideration.

Deputy Chief David Lizotte has been acting as interim chief until a formal announcement is made.

The announcement will be made at 11:30 a.m. in the Ashley Room at New Bedford City Hall.
