Alexandria, Virginia — A Republican congressional leader and two Capitol police officers reportedly are being treated after they were shot this morning. It happened at a baseball field in suburban Alexandria, Virginia just outside Washington.

GOP House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana was shot. Republican Congressman Mo Brooks of Alabama says two members of the lawmakers' security detail were shot as they returned fire. There are conflicting reports on which agency those officers are with.

Brooks says the shooter was outside the fence where the Republicans were taking early-morning practice for a fundraising baseball game this week. The man reportedly asked if Republicans or Democrats were on the field before shooting. AL.com reports the shooter approached Florida Congressman Ron Desantis to ask the question. Witnesses report as many as 50 shots were fired.

The shooter is reportedly in custody.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer says President Trump and Vice President Pence are aware of the shooting.
