Acushnet Man Killed In New Bedford Crash

A Wednesday night crash in New Bedford leaves an Acushnet man dead.

Lt. Amos Melo says the two-vehicle accident took place around 10:48 p.m. at Plympton St. and Tarkiln Hill Rd.

Melo says 43-year-old Jose Vaz, of New Bedford, was driving on Tarkiln Hill Rd. when he collided with a vehicle driven by 52-year-old John Leo Avery of Acushnet.

Avery was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead early Thursday morning.

Vaz was arraigned Thursday morning in Third District Court on charges of motor vehicle homicide, OUI liquor, and operating to endanger and was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail.
