Abandoned Wareham Dog Euthanized, Search for Owner Continues

WAREHAM - The dog that was found wandering a Carver road on Monday has been euthanized.

The Wareham Department of Natural Resources released a statement Tuesday night, announcing the decision to put the Rottweiler to sleep.

The unnamed dog was found on Farm to Market Road in Carver on Monday, and was brought to a local animal shelter by Wareham DNR officers in hopes that medical treatment for the dog would be forthcoming.

Wareham DNR states that while funding for the dog's treatment was made available by numerous donors, the Rottweiler's condition was too severe to treat. DNR officials say a baseball-size tumor on the dog's snout would have required extensive surgery and removal of a portion of his jaw and skull. After lengthy discussion with veterinarians, DNR officer Josh Kimball says the difficult decision to euthanize the dog was made.

Authorities are still seeking for the owner of the dog. If found, Kimball says animal cruelty charges may be filed.
