The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced that a woman will appear on the $10 bill.

The mystery woman will be determined soon and Treasury secretary, Jacob J. Lew, who selects the honoree, will make his decision by the end of this year. The new $10 bill will appear in 2020, which also marks the 100th anniversary that the 19th Amendment was passed, which granted women the right to vote.

According to The New York Times, the only rule in choosing the woman is that it has to be a woman who has passed away. Also, Mr. Lew stated that he is looking for a woman “who was a champion for our inclusive democracy.” Many people so far are in favor of Harriet Tubman as the top choice for the woman to appear on the $20 bill.

Faces on bills have not changed since 1929, when Andrew Jackson replaced Grover Cleveland on the $20 bill.

However, Alexander Hamilton, who is currently on the $10 bill, will not go away when the new bills are introduced. Hamilton will either remain on the reverse side or in another series of bills.

Lew stated that the planning began well before he was announced as Treasury secretary in 2013.

According to USA Today, no woman has appeared on new paper currency since 1896, when Martha Washington appeared on the silver-dollar-bill.

By law, no living person may appear on a bill, and George Washington must always remain on the $1 bill.
