Ideal conditions this morning for the 21st Buzzards Bay Swim.  More than 260 swimmers from 92 different cities and towns crossed New Bedford Harbor in a 1.2 mile swim.  The starting line was at the former Davy's Locker (newly named "The Edge").  Hundreds of spectators were waiting and cheering at the finish line at Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven.

The top three finishers are listed below:

 

For the second year in a row, 17-year-old Alex Gallant of Lakeville was the overall winner.  Alex's time was 21:12 (only 32 seconds shy of the record).  Alex swims for the Apponequet swim team.  This is his fourth Buzzards Bay Swim.

Nathan Garner of Nashua, New Hampshire placed second with a time of 21:27.  Nathan is 18 years old and swims for Bowden College.

Frank Wuest of Boston placed third.  Frank turns 54 next week.  He swims for the Cambridge Masters Swim club and has competed for MIT.  Frank's time was 21:32.

Morgan McCarthy of East Orleans was the leading lady for the second year in a row.  Morgan formerly swam for James Madison University.  She is 24 years old.  She is followed by 29-year-old Kirby Aarsheim of Boston (25:35) and 42-year-old Katia Sowers (25:41).

 

The swim is the signature fundraising event for the Buzzard's Bay Coalition.  Swimmers and their sponsors raised over $140,000 today.  The money will be used to keep New Bedford Harbor clean.
